What is belly button surgery or umbilicoplasty?

Belly button reshaping surgery, or umbilicoplasty, is becoming a very popular procedure due to its success rates.

It can dramatically improve the appearance of  ‘outie’ and distorted belly buttons.

People may want to have their belly button reshaped for a number of reasons. Some people want to have their ‘outie’ turned into an ‘innie’. Others may have a distorted belly button following previous surgery or weight loss.

Many women find that the shape of their belly button changes after pregnancy. Belly button piercing correction is also a popular reason for patients to want belly button surgery.

The shape of the belly button can change because of a hernia (both umbilical or paraumbilical hernias), so I always perform a careful clinical examination as part of the planning for any belly button or tummy tuck surgery.

An umbilicoplasty is often combined with other procedures, such as a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) or reconstructive breast surgery, but the belly button can also be reshaped as a stand alone surgery.

Belly button surgery can be performed under local anaesthetic but you may need a general anaesthetic depending on the technique used to achieve the best results.

Scars are hidden within the belly button and recovery from surgery usually takes a week to 10 days. If a hernia has been repaired at the same time then certain activities are best avoided until this repair has reached full strength. You will be given detailed guidance regarding this as part of your assessment.
