Prominent Ear Correction in Children
Paediatric Pinnaplasty and Paediatric Otoplasty

Mr Jonathan Adamthwaite is part of a paediatric multidisciplinary team treating children with prominent ears in a private healthcare setting. Ear correction surgery, also known as otoplasty or pinnaplasty, is a procedure to reposition or reshape the ears. The surgery is usually carried out on children and young teenagers but it can also be highly successful in adults.

Otoplasty is the same as Pinnaplasty

The shape and position of the ears can have a dramatic effect on the overall appearance of the face. For this reason,

Mr Adamthwaite carries out before and after computer-aided simulations with you ahead of surgery.

Ear asymmetry is also a common problem and surgery aims to make the ears as symmetrical as possible, although complete symmetry cannot be guaranteed.

What is the recovery process?

Discomfort after ear correction surgery is mild and can be controlled with painkillers. Aspirin, ibuprofen and other non steroidals should not be used as they increase the risk of bleeding.

A dressing will remain in place for 48 hours and will help the ears heal in their new position.

You will need to sleep upright for a few nights and should not carry out any vigorous activity for the first week after surgery.

Bruising, swelling and mild numbness can be common after ear surgery but should settle within two weeks.

Will I see the results immediately?

The results of the surgery should be immediately apparent but there may be some swelling and you must keep the dressing in place for 48 hours.

You will need to wear a sports headband in bed for 6 weeks after the dressing is removed.

The procedure is very effective at improving patients' confidence and self esteem.
