Nose surgery ('nose job'), or rhinoplasty, is a very popular procedure. Some people want nose surgery because they feel self conscious about the appearance of their nose, while others might need a rhinoplasty to improve their breathing. Nose surgery is one of the most delicate procedures and in the right circumstances can dramatically improve the appearance of the whole face.

It is extremely important that the patient and the surgeon agree on realistic expectations of what can and cannot be achieved with nose surgery.

3D Simulation and 4D Augmented Reality of your result

Mr Adamthwaite uses the latest 3D simulation software to help plan your surgery. This not only helps you see how changing the nose in certain ways will potentially look but also is invaluable for Mr Adamthwaite as it reveals a great deal about what it is you are looking for and your expectations. Mr Adamthwaite is now using 4D Augmented Reality and is able to show you in realtime how changes to your nose will look.

What is the recovery process?

After surgery you will have a lightweight plastic splint on the nose for 7 days.

Swelling and bruising around the eyes is normal, peaking at 1 week then gradually settling.

It is important to sleep upright at night to reduce swelling.

Patients must avoid aspirin, ibuprofen and other non steroidal painkillers which can increase the risk of bleeding.

Four weeks after surgery you can resume exercise but violent head movements, such as during sit ups, is best avoided for 6 weeks.

You may also experience a 'stuffy' nose after surgery but this will improve.

It is essential for patients to realise that the shape of the nose when the splint is removed is not the final one.

Can I have a second rhinoplasty?

It is generally accepted that between 5% and 10% of patients who have nose surgery may require a refinement following surgery, but this is most common among patients whose noses have been injured.

Revision rhinoplasty procedures cannot be carried out immediately as the nose has to settle first.

Secondary procedures are usually carried out at least 9 months after the initial surgery.

My teenage daughter/son wants a rhinoplasty. Are they too young?

Until recently it was thought that operating on a young person's nose could interfere with growth but this is not true. Rhinoplasty can be performed safely on teenagers.

However, maturity and psychological factors are the most important things to consider for young people interested in nose surgery.
